Front Door Makeover with Curb Appeal

Painting your front door is a daunting task. There’s the prep work, the painting in all those nooks and crannies of the molding, then the waiting while the paint dries before you can close your door. My front door has been bugging me since we moved in. The sad brown color and the mismatched handle hardware made me cringe whenever I opened the door. It’s not an awesome feeling when you can’t stand to walk through your front door. So when DecoArt asked if I’d like to try their new paint, I jumped at the chance.

I picked Williamsburg Blue, since our house is a traditional ranch style house and I thought the grayish blue color would complement the style nicely. But in the back of my mind, I knew that no matter what color I picked, it would be better than the one I had! So that made the decision pretty easy.

Easy Front Door Makeover

All I did when it came time to prep the door for painting was clean it well, and scrape off some weird gunk that had accumulated around the window frames. Then it just took a couple coats of paint, and about an hour drying time (living in the desert has its advantages!), and the door was done and ready to close. Even painting around all the molding wasn’t hard, thanks to the low-drip formula of the Curb Appeal paint. I even got my 9-year-old to help!

Here are my tips for an easy front door makeover.

Start with good paint! You want paint that will be easy to work with (dries fast, less drips), and will remain colorfast, even in harsh environments. Check out DecoArt’s website for more info on how their Curb Appeal paint is specially formulated for these types of projects.

A little prep work goes a long way. Start by cleaning your door well with a degreaser or soap and water. Exterior doors can get pretty grimy! Then use a painter’s tool or scraper to get rid of any flaking paint or gummy caulk.

The order you paint your door matters! Start by painting around the outside edges, the surfaces that will be touching the door frame when the door is closed. That gives these areas more time to dry before coming in contact with the door frame. Then you can take your time working on the molding in the middle areas of the door.

If possible, remove the door handles before painting that part of the door. It makes for a much cleaner finished product than trying to paint around them. Plus, you get to see all the layers of paint that lived there before. It’s kind of like your own episode of Finding your Roots!

Keep your sanity by keeping your area clean. Cover the floor with a drop cloth, and if you have extra side light frames like mine, use masking tape for a nice clean edge between the door and the frame.
