Lilac Palette

Lilac Love

I have this thing with Lilacs. I love them, but they don't love me back. It's unrequited Lilac Love.

It may not be anything personal since most all plants don't love me back. That might be because they sense they're not safe in my presence. I do have a black thumb, but I have the best of green thumb intentions.

In our last house, we had a beautiful lilac bush near a window on the back of our living room. When we needed to add a concrete patio there, we decided to try to save the lilac by digging it up and moving it to a safe location. After much digging, a little light cursing, and a few marital arguments, we finally manhandled that thing into a sunnier spot near the middle of the yard. (Lilac's have surprisingly large root systems!)

Sadly, it never thrived there and barely ever produced another bloom again. I think it was holding a grudge.

Luckily my friend Erin, at Lilac palette with shades of blue and purple

She posted this picture on Instagram a few days ago and I asked if she'd mind me turning it into a palette and sharing it with you. I just love the variety of blues and purples found throughout the blooms, all from the same plant.

Maybe someday I'll try again with a lilac. I imagine it will go better if we don't uproot it and drag it all over the yard like last time. In the meantime, I'll have to just enjoy other people's lilacs.

Blooms like this remind me that Summer is right around the corner, and it's the perfect time to say Happy Summer! (Even though it isn't yet. It's never too early to start getting happy about something, especially Summer.) Hope yours is a good one, filled with sun, color, and happy memories!

This lilac palette reminds me of what my master bedroom used to be like before I moved and rented out my house for two years. I've always had a thing for purple, though now in my house I use it more for accent colors than walls. Have you ever done a wine inspired palette? Plants seem to like me for the most part. I have a mature lilac bush on one side of my yard that I planted years ago. The other side is supposed to have a matching one, but after three attempts and three dead trees, I had to give up. The soil on that side is too wet.
