Blue Door Palette

I love front doors. Like the wrapping on a gift box, they are full of possibilities. What's inside? Do the people living there have a cozy home? Does the personality of their front door reflect the personality of the inside of their home? Is it weird that I think of these things while looking at a door?

I was re-watching Love Actually again recently, and realized that one of my favorite characters is actually a door. There's a brief moment when Natalie is standing in front of the Prime Minister's door at 10 Downing Street as it slowly swings open. It's got this beautiful deep black gloss that you just want to reach out and touch, and it perfectly captures the restrained beauty and gravitas of the British sensibility.

OK, yeah, maybe that's weird to fall for a door. But just try looking at this door and not falling in love a little bit:

I came across this photo on a blogger friend's instagram @LeroyLime (thank you Dawn!) and I fell instantly in love with the colors and the slightly wonky angles of the awning, steps, and wrought iron. I even love the old-fashioned key holes and the central door handle. They definitely don't make them like they used to!

I think what makes this such a fun palette is the range of blues in the patina on the awning, which somehow perfectly matches the gray-blues of the concrete patio. It creates a tight blue-green palette with all the shades represented in one shot. It's enough to make a color-lover like me want to walk up and knock on a perfect stranger's door.

Fortunately for my easily-embarrassed children, this particular door resides on the other side of the pond from me, so that awkward encounter will probably never happen.

This photo makes me want to repaint my front door again. Maybe when the weather warms up, I'll try a fun new color like this. Now I just need some black wrought-iron fencing with fleur-de-lis on top to complete the effect.
