12 Must Haves for a Cozy Fall Home

These are my favorite ideas for creating the feel of a cozy fall home, no matter what kind of house you live in, or what the weather is like outside!

I'm always surprised by how quickly the weather turns cool in the fall. I know the end of summer is coming, but somehow I'm never emotionally ready for it. This year, I'm trying to comfort myself by making my home as warm and cozy as possible.

Who doesn't want more cozy in their life? No matter the season, we're always searching for that elusive sense of safety, comfort, and "home" that tells us we're in the right place. Nothing can touch us here. The cold world is far away.

That's the idea I'm looking for when creating my home for my family, and especially at this time of year. The weather outside is unpredictable, you never know how to dress in the morning to go to work and school, and some days you already have to scrape ice off your windshield just to get there.

So let's just stay home, shall we? And cuddle under some comfortable blankets, next to a fall scented candle, with a hot cup of coffee and a warm slice of homemade pumpkin bread.

How to Create a Cozy Home

Making your home feel cozy is all about layering. You can have the comfiest couch in the world, but in my opinion, until you add a fluffy throw blanket, it's not truly cozy.

The layering effect goes for everything - furniture, lighting, flooring, and even fall clothes! This isn't the time for minimalism. This is the time to add everything soft and sumptuous to the spaces you use everyday.

Furniture - try adding a couple of soft sweater-style pillows for the fall and winter season. And of course, a coordinating cable knit lap blanket.

Lighting - turn off the overhead lights! When the sun gets lower in the sky and you feel the need for more light inside, turn on your lamps, not your overheads. And light a few candles for some natural light hues and ambience.

Flooring - whether you have hard floors or carpet, fall is a great time to layer rugs for cozy toes. Try throwing a faux-fur rug over whatever you currently have in your seating area. You'll love the plush feel of the fur under your toes.

Clothing - fall was made for soft leggings, fluffy sweaters, and fuzzy socks. Layer up and sink into the feeling of comfort that comes from knowing that it's cold outside, but not being able to feel it through all the layers of softness.

Bring on the Cozy!

When you feel the need to get comfy, here are my favorite ways to welcome fall into your home and feel good about it from head to toe.
