Have you ever been browsing through a thrift shop and seen one of these spice racks? Or maybe you have one in your own kitchen? I was at a shop the other day and spied this one, bereft of its glass jars, looking a little lonely on the shelf. Indeed, the price tag only showed $1, an indication of its fallen state. I thought, “surely I could do something with that.” Not sure what I’d do, I decided that $1 was a price I was willing to gamble on and I picked it up. (This is why I’m in danger of becoming a hoarder some day.) When I got home… Keep Reading
Woven Painting
I might be a little biased, but I believe that every home should have at least some art and some books, not necessarily in that order. If you find your home lacking in the art department (or the “funds-to-buy-art” department) I’ve got a project for you today that you can do yourself, with no experience, and very few supplies, to add a little color to a room. This is a woven painting that I recently finished for my bedroom. You’ll need: A Wooden Frame (build yourself, or buy from your local hobby store) 2 Colors of Acrylic or Latex Paint (I used Valspar paint samples from Lowes) 2 Large sheets… Keep Reading
Fun and Easy DIY Gifts
Today is Black Friday, and I am happily sitting here at my desk, not shopping. Don’t get me wrong, I love to shop. I just to do not like to compete with all the crazed, must-get-it-done-in-one-day shoppers out there on this day. Similarly, I try to avoid the gym for the beginning part of January. Aww, who am I kidding, I avoid the gym all 365 days a year. But I digress. After I posted my “3 Mason Jars – 3 Ways” project, a friend of mine asked me if I had any other ideas for “artsy, inexpensive Christmas gift ideas”. Well, look no further because instead of shopping today, I’ve… Keep Reading
3 Mason Jars – 3 Ways
Yes, I know I’m about the last person in America to jump on the Mason Jar bandwagon, but I have to throw in my two cents here. I made a fun little discovery a couple of weeks ago at a thrift store that I want to share with you. I found this little galvanized tin for $2.99 and then started looking around for something to put in it. I found three large mason jars for $.69 each, and figured I could come up with some way to use them together. Instead I came up with three ways! Kitchen Storage: Add flour, sugar, oats, and cute labels on twine. Arrange… Keep Reading
A Gift of Creativity
Two of my most precious friends gave me a gift this weekend for my (garbled mumbling)th birthday that really touched my heart. I wanted to share it with you, to hopefully spark an idea for how to shower someone you love with encouragement. They found a cute little birdcage and filled it with charcoal pencils, paintbrushes, cards and all sorts of art supplies and tools. Then they clipped even more supplies and colorful paint chips to the outside, and even included little handwritten tags with great quotes on them. They told me they hoped this would be my most creative year yet. I am already inspired! This was a birthday… Keep Reading
Five Minute Fall Craft
Yesterday was the first day of Fall. That means apple cider, pumpkin pie, and let’s not forget… Candy Corn! I mentioned to a friend that, in a moment of weakness, I bought a jumbo bag of Brach’s Autumn Mix. (Yes, that’s the kind with the pumpkins. They’re like 4 corn pieces in one and the most efficient path to a candy corn headache. Y’all know what I’m talking about.) Anyway, she says to me, “Make sure you seal the bag really well, or they’ll get all dried out.” Well, I refrained from admitting to her that no bag of candy corn has EVER gone stale in our house. But, in… Keep Reading
What Fun is Organizing if it isn’t Cute?
So, about a month or two ago, I told you to check back next week for part two of my hair accessory organization project. (See “Craft Storage Saves our Bathroom“.) Unfortunately “punctual” and “organized” do not always go hand in hand. Here (finally!) is my cute solution to all the hair clips that have taken over my daughters’ bathroom. My only problem is that I coordinated these hangers to go with our bathroom decor, but my kids liked them so much that they each want to keep theirs in their own room. So you might want to get your kids involved in this project from the beginning if yours have opinions… Keep Reading
Family Economics
In our family, the beginning of the school year is marked by a continuous flow of money. Unfortunately, the money is flowing out, not in, and I’m not sure I could tell you where it’s all going. My children, their school, and its PTA assure me that it’s going to good causes. In the interest of staunching the flow, I think it’s time we start paying allowances. Now, that might seem like more money going out, but I’m hoping it will help my kids decide what is truly important to spend their money on, now that it’s going to be their money. So I created a cute chore and allowance… Keep Reading
Craft Storage Saves our Bathroom!
My daughters have adorable headbands. Like 50 of them. The headbands make great (and easy) accessories when getting ready for school, but as soon as the girls get home, the headbands magically fly off their heads and land all over our house. Usually they’re strewn about countertops, dresser tops, and coffee tables. Along with shoes, these are the items most likely to result in a cranky mom. When they “clean” them up, they all go in a drawer in the bathroom, where they spend a few days trying to climb out and liberate themselves from confinement. Either that or they’re multiplying in there like little colorful bunnies, which would explain… Keep Reading
