Pumpkin Palette

Pumpkin Palette

It’s Fall y’all! We are deep into planning Halloween costumes, decorating with pumpkins, and buying candy. And by “buying candy” I mean buying bags of candy for the trick-or-treaters, which will be eaten by us in the next week, and then going out and buying more candy to actually give the trick-or-treaters. Candy corn should not be made available for purchase before October 29th, as it invariably signals the official beginning of my end-of-the-year diet fail.

But I digress.

My kids asked for one thing this year – tiny pumpkins. They fall in love with them every time we set foot in a grocery store. And I can’t blame them. Such cute tiny autumn-ness, all in a little dense package that nestles coolly in your hand.

So I bought them each a little pumpkin, thinking we would decorate the dining room with them. But they immediately took them to their rooms and set them on their night stands, so they could see them first thing every morning when they wake up. I think my kids may be into fall.

I’m more of a summer girl myself, so this time of year is always a little bittersweet for me. Switching out my sandals for sneakers always brings me down a little, so I’m trying to revel in the beautiful colors and fresh smells that make up for the chilly mornings.

This pumpkin palette captures that happy fall feeling for me. I love the variety of bright oranges, set against the slate blue-green accents. Such a fun balance of contrasting colors. To me, if you’re going to decorate with oranges, you need to compliment them with a cooler blue, green, or gray. Otherwise the orange can take over and become oppressive. But that’s just my opinion. If you love orange, just go for it!

I hope you’re enjoying whatever fall looks and feels like in your part of the country. I’m off to find a sweater, then to the grocery store for more mini-pumpkins. Maybe this time I’ll get to decorate with them!

Had my first pumpkin spice latte today at Starbucks. Yummmm. I agree about softening orange with a complementary color. I'm in love this year with blue and white chinoiserie with orange. Pinterest is my friend!

My favorite way to use orange is as a compliment to blue!
