Big Plans for this Office in the Latest $100 Room Challenge

I’m so excited it’s time for another $100 Room Challenge! This time I’m tackling my husband’s office, which doubles as our guest room.

I love the $100 Room Challenge because it makes me get things done and keeps me on a budget. This will be my fifth makeover, and I’m always amazed at what you can accomplish in four weeks with $100 dollars. If you need proof, just check out how far $100 went in these rooms:

The Family Room

The Breakfast Nook

My Daughter’s Room

The Guest Bath

This challenge was started by Erin of Lemons, Lavender, and Laundry and I always love being a part of a group of creative people who are trying to do the same thing – get stuff done, while saving money. Be sure to check out her post explaining the whole $100 Room Challenge concept, and how it’s impacted her life.

And now, let’s get to the plans for this office/guest room makeover!

$100 Room Challenge Office Makeover

Let me be the first to admit that I’m not going to be completely starting from scratch with this makeover. This room got some updates when we moved into the house, but now it needs some finishing touches to make it look good.

Home office before, dark and boring

Here’s where it started originally.

When we bought the house, this room was sort of a leftover space. It had really gross carpeting and not much space for a bedroom suite. So we decided to make it an office/studio/guest room.

We pulled up the nasty carpet and replaced it with vinyl plank flooring. I always meant to write a post about that project, but never quite got around to it. Maybe someday…

Home office wall of built in cabinetry

Then we decided that built in cabinets would be a lot more functional than several pieces of furniture. So we lined one wall with cabinets and turned it into an office wall.

A couch in the home office means it can double as a guest room

We added an IKEA Holmsund sleeper sofa because 95% of the time a couch is more functional than a bed in this room. It doesn’t take up much space and is so useful everyday for sitting and studying, but then when guests come visit, it easily turns into a comfy queen size bed.

Fluffy dog laying on gray carpet in our office

We added a rug and curtains, but something was definitely still lacking. Even the dog was bored.

So the room got cleaned up and functional, but it lacked a little color and a lot of “cozy” factor. That’s where this makeover comes in!

Big Plans for the Office

Blue paint colors displayed for picking an accent wall color in the office.

This is the fun part – I get to spend all $100 on pretty things! I plan on painting an accent color on the wall behind the couch. I’m thinking a deep indigo blue, but I’m afraid that might be too dark. What do you think?

Then I’m going to add some fun throw pillows on the couch, made from cloth napkins I found on clearance at World Market.

I’ll be creating some original artwork for the bare walls. (I’m most excited about this project!)

And I’ll be adding a wood shelf in the space above the computer monitor. This room has plenty of storage, but it’s a little lacking in display space.

Of course, as always, I’ll be shopping the rest of my house for extra accessories and decor, because $100 only goes so far!

I better get to work! Be sure to follow along by newsletter so you don’t miss a post.

"Even the dog was bored". Love it! I cannot wait to see some color in this space, and I will say that every time I have seen a room with a bold accent wall, I love it! Go for it!
