Five Minute Fall Craft

Yesterday was the first day of Fall.  That means apple cider, pumpkin pie, and let’s not forget… Candy Corn!

I mentioned to a friend that, in a moment of weakness, I bought a jumbo bag of Brach’s Autumn Mix. (Yes, that’s the kind with the pumpkins.  They’re like 4 corn pieces in one and the most efficient path to a candy corn headache.  Y’all know what I’m talking about.)  Anyway, she says to me, “Make sure you seal the bag really well, or they’ll get all dried out.”  Well, I refrained from admitting to her that no bag of candy corn has EVER gone stale in our house.  But, in the interest of looking like I have some self control, I decided to find a cute way of storing, and sealing, the candy corn.  The result was today’s Five Minute Craft.

You’ll need:
A jar with a cork (preferably at least 2 inches wide)
A cabinet knob (mine came from Hobby Lobby)
A screw a little smaller in diameter than the screw on the knob, with wide threads
A screwdriver (flat or phillips head, depending on the screw described above)

Here are the steps:
1.  Open bag of candy corn.  Test a few to make sure they taste OK.
2.  Wash and thoroughly dry the jar and cork.
3.  Have a couple more candy corn, since the bag’s already open anyway.
4.  Find the center of the cork and use the wide-threaded screw to make a pilot hole by screwing it all the way into the cork.  Remove screw.

5.  Reward yourself with a few candy corn.
6.  Gently screw the cabinet knob into the pilot hole, and if the bolt on the knob is long enough, fasten the included nut and washer to the other end.

7.  At this point, one or two more candy corn can’t hurt.
8.  Tie a ribbon or twine around the neck of the jar.  (Mine says things like “apple pie” and “pumpkins” on it.)
9.  Fill the jar with any remaining candy corn.  Make a note to buy more at the store, since yours no longer fills the jar adequately.

Maybe this would be a three-minute craft if you have more self control than me and can omit steps 1, 3, 5, 7, and the second half of 9.  Happy Fall, everyone!
